More than just the closure of activities, this process seeks to return the exploited area to society in adequate environmental and safety conditions, ensuring the reduction of liabilities and the socio-environmental sustainability of the territory.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2><b>Mine Closure and Environmental Rehabilitation<\/b><\/h2><h3><b>Geological Hazards<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the geological aspect, one of the main risks is associated with <\/span><b>acid rock drainage (ARD) generation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, caused by the oxidation of sulfide minerals in contact with water and oxygen. This reaction can release contaminants and compromise waterways, making rehabilitation more complex and costly. Furthermore, the presence of fractures and aquifers can favor the percolation of contaminants, requiring specific containment and monitoring solutions.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Geotechnical Risks<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a geotechnical perspective, mine closure requires special attention to the long-term stability of slopes, waste rock piles, and tailings deposits. Lack of maintenance can result in:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erosions in exposed areas.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Landslides or collapses in inactive structures.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subsidence and collapses in underground mines.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even after operations cease, risks persist and require continuous monitoring, as well as definitive stabilization projects. The success of this phase depends on robust technical solutions, long-term analyses, and ongoing safety measures.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Financial Risks<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financially, closure is often underestimated, leading to unprovisioned costs that can compromise the project&#039;s financial balance. Drainage, revegetation, environmental compensation, and continuous monitoring systems represent significant expenses. These costs are often <\/span><b>higher than initial forecasts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and, when neglected, they become decades-long environmental liabilities, accompanied by fines, lawsuits and loss of institutional credibility.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, closure and rehabilitation must be treated not only as a legal obligation, but as part of a <\/span><b>sustainability, reputation and continuity strategy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the mineral sector.<\/span><\/p><p><br \/><br \/><\/p><h2><b>Innovation and Sustainability in Mining<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, innovation and sustainability have become indispensable pillars for the competitiveness and social acceptance of modern mining.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Technological Advances<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a technological perspective, digital tools, automation, and remote monitoring systems have increased the accuracy of geological and geotechnical models, reducing uncertainties and enabling rapid responses to identified risks. Furthermore:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More efficient beneficiation technologies.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuse of waste in production processes.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integration into the logic of the circular economy.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These advances reduce the generation of liabilities and increase operational efficiency.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Socio-environmental Perspective<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a socio-environmental perspective, regulatory pressures and societal demands have driven the incorporation of environmental practices. <\/span><b>ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This involves:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing carbon footprint and using water efficiently.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuse of materials and waste.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development of community initiatives in areas of mine influence.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innovative solutions, such as dry stacking, autonomous mining, and the use of renewable energy, strengthen the operational resilience and social legitimacy of the activity.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Financial Aspects<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a financial perspective, investing in innovation and sustainability isn&#039;t just a competitive advantage: it&#039;s a prerequisite for remaining in the global market. Companies that adopt these practices attract greater investor interest, have easier access to credit lines, and reduce their exposure to regulatory and reputational risks.
